Blocks are community development blocks. Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland have no panchayats under Part IX of the Constitution; villages there fall under traditional or autonomous councils, so the panchayat count is zero. Towns come from our urban local body directory, also built from LGD.
Survey sampling frames
Pick gram panchayats and villages at random from the official list, block by block, so every unit has a known chance of selection.
Beneficiary verification
Match scheme beneficiary lists against LGD village and panchayat codes, then send field teams to check a sample on the ground.
Scheme monitoring
Plan visits to every block or a fixed share of panchayats, and track coverage against the full list rather than a partial one.
We send a scope and a quote within one working day. No payment to get a quote.
What the numbers mean and where they come from.
How many gram panchayats and villages are there in India?
The Local Government Directory lists 2,55,392 gram panchayats (and their local equivalents) and 6,77,656 villages in 784 districts and 7,338 blocks, as published on 25 September 2026.
Where does this list come from?
From the Local Government Directory (LGD), run by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. States update it when they create, merge or rename districts, blocks, panchayats and villages. We read the daily open copy of LGD and rebuild these pages from it.
Why are some villages not linked to a gram panchayat?
LGD links a village to a panchayat only when the state has mapped it. About 54,907 villages have no mapping yet, often in states without panchayats or in forest and uninhabited villages. We list them by sub-district instead.
Can I use this as a survey sampling frame?
Yes. LGD is the official frame for local government units, and each village carries its Census 2011 code where the state has recorded it. Check the date on the page, because boundaries change. We can send the full frame as a spreadsheet with codes.
