Marathi fieldwork from Konkan fishing villages to Vidarbha cotton taluks

Bharat Survey is a survey company in Maharashtra for campaign teams, municipal and state departments, CSR foundations and brands. We write questionnaires in Marathi, add Hindi, Urdu or Gujarati versions for city wards that need them, and run fieldwork on an offline Android app that records GPS, time and duration for every interview.

  • Marathi questionnaires, back-translated
  • Samples split across six revenue divisions
  • Separate designs for metro wards and rural talukas

State at a glance

Census 2011 counted about 45% of Maharashtra's people in urban areas, so a statewide sample almost always needs an urban and a rural frame drawn separately.

Marathi wording that respondents trust

Farm distress in Marathwada, water supply in Mumbai's suburbs and delivery of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana surface in different proportions by region, so we ask about issues in neutral, piloted Marathi. The intro script a respondent hears begins: हे मतदार सर्वेक्षण गोपनीय आहे, and our consent screen names Bharat Survey as the सर्वेक्षण एजन्सी महाराष्ट्र respondents are speaking to.

We do not name parties as clients, import voter rolls or promise an outcome. Reports show sample size and margin of error beside every figure.

Electoral cycles

As an assembly election survey agency Maharashtra teams can brief well ahead, we design differently for each of the state's electorates.

  1. 01

    Vidhan Sabha: 288 constituencies

The assembly elected in November 2024 runs to 2029. A Vidhan Sabha election survey agency in Maharashtra has to weight Mumbai and Thane, where many seats sit close together, against large rural seats in Vidarbha and Marathwada.

    Lok Sabha: 48 constituencies

Maharashtra returns the second-largest group of MPs after Uttar Pradesh. As a Lok Sabha election survey agency in Maharashtra we build each seat from its assembly segments and report only where sample size supports a reading.

    Municipal corporations

Searchers call this a Nagar Nigam election survey agency in Maharashtra, though the bodies are Mahanagarpalikas with multi-member wards in many cities. We sample by ward, not by city average.

As a Panchayat election survey agency in Maharashtra we sample by Zilla Parishad group and Panchayat Samiti gan. The booth management app Maharashtra volunteers use holds tasks and turnout notes, never voter lists.

Many companies with CSR obligations run programmes around their own plants in Pune, Raigad, Aurangabad and Nagpur districts. We design baselines and end-lines around those catchments, compare them with similar villages outside, and hand over raw records so the board can audit what was reported.

For state and municipal schemes we stay outside the implementing chain: enumerators report to our supervisors, a share of interviews is back-checked, and every record carries location and duration. Maharashtra's split between Mahanagarpalikas, Nagar Parishads and gram panchayats is built into the sampling frame from the start.

We recruit and train enumerators for each project in the divisions a sample covers, because Varhadi in Vidarbha, Malvani on the Konkan coast and Mumbai's mixed Hindi-Marathi speech all change how a question lands. Konkan fieldwork avoids the peak June to September rains wherever deadlines allow.

Not the right fit if

  • Loading voter rolls or tracking individual voters
  • Promising a seat count or result
  • Projects that need an iOS-only app

A good fit if

  • NGO baselines in tribal talukas of Nandurbar, Gadchiroli or Palghar
  • Marathi household studies you can audit
  • Low-network villages that need an offline app
FAQ

Straight answers to the questions people ask most about this topic.

Do you run Maharashtra surveys in Marathi?

Yes. Questionnaires are written in Marathi, back-translated and piloted in a non-sample ward or village. For Mumbai, Thane and Malegaon wards we can add Hindi or Urdu versions, and the respondent chooses the language when the interview starts.

Can one study cover all 36 districts?

Yes, but we draw the sample by revenue division first, then by district, with urban and rural frames kept apart. That way a Vidarbha figure and a Konkan figure can each be read on its own before a weighted state figure is produced.

Do you have offices in Maharashtra?

We do not claim a local office. Field teams are deployed per project, and we recruit and train enumerators for the divisions the sample covers. Supervisors back-check a share of interviews using the GPS and duration logged on every record.

How do housing societies affect urban fieldwork?

Many Mumbai, Thane and Pune households live in gated societies where the secretary's permission is needed. We build that request into the schedule, carry an authorisation letter, and replace refused societies from a pre-drawn reserve list rather than skipping to convenient ones.

When is the next Vidhan Sabha election due?

The assembly elected in November 2024 has a five-year term ending in 2029. Exact dates are set only by the Election Commission of India, so we plan tracking rounds backwards from the term end and adjust once a schedule is announced.
