Household income, assets, work and access to services, measured the same way everywhere

Bharat Survey is a socio economic survey agency in India for government departments, development authorities, CSR foundations and researchers who need reliable household data on income, assets, employment, education, health access and scheme coverage. We design the sample, list households on the ground, interview with an offline Android app that records GPS and time for every visit, back-check a share of interviews, and hand over a documented dataset your analysts can trust.

What gets measured

Most socio-economic surveys combine the same building blocks. Keeping definitions close to national surveys makes results comparable.

Roster

Household members

Age, sex, relation to head, marital status, education and disability, using definitions close to Census and NSS practice so results can be compared.
Economy

Income, consumption, debt

Income by source, broad consumption categories, borrowing and savings. We tell you plainly that self-reported income is noisy and suggest asset indices alongside it.
Housing

Dwelling and amenities

Structure type, ownership, drinking water, sanitation, cooking fuel, electricity and internet access, with optional photo evidence.
Work

Employment and migration

Activity status, sector, days worked, seasonal migration and remittances, the areas most often asked about in labour studies.
Services

Scheme access

Which schemes the household knows, applied for and received: rations, pensions, housing, health cover, scholarships.
Social

Social category

Recorded with neutral wording, only where the terms of reference require it for policy analysis, and never used to target individuals.
Method

The survey is the visible part. The quality is decided in design and supervision.

Design

Sampling frame and sample size

We start from Census 2011 enumeration blocks or villages, updated with LGD codes, and calculate sample size for the smallest area where you need a separate estimate, including design effect.

Listing

Fresh household listing

Old frames miss new households. Enumerators list dwellings in each selected village or block, and households are selected from that fresh list.

Labour studies

Labour market surveys come up again and again in state and board tenders. Three common setups.

Survey agency for employment and labour market survey

A data collection agency for employment and labour market survey work runs listing, interviews and supervision to the state's schedule, leaving analysis to the department or its research partner.
  • Schedule-based fieldwork
  • PLFS-style activity codes
  • Clean data handover

Context

India already has large national household surveys: the Periodic Labour Force Survey and Household Consumption Expenditure Survey run by MoSPI's National Statistics Office, and the Socio Economic and Caste Census of 2011 run by the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. The SECC socio economic caste census data is still used for identifying beneficiaries in several schemes.

A commissioned survey should add what those sources cannot: smaller areas, a specific population, a scheme-specific question, or a more recent picture. We check what the national data already answers before recommending a sample, so you do not pay to re-measure something that is published.

Useful national references

  • PLFS for labour indicators
  • HCES for consumption
  • Census 2011 for frames
  • SECC 2011 for deprivation
  • LGD for location codes

Not the right fit if

  • Official statistics that replace NSO or Census data
  • Caste enumeration for political targeting
  • District estimates from a state-sized sample
  • Income figures without stated measurement error

A good fit if

  • Area- or population-specific household data
  • Scheme coverage and access studies
  • Labour market surveys to a state schedule
  • Documented datasets for further analysis
FAQ

Straight answers to the questions people ask most about this topic.

What is a socio economic survey?

It is a household survey that measures the economic and social conditions of a population: members, education, work, income or consumption, assets, housing, and access to services. Governments and funders use it for planning, targeting and as a baseline for programmes.

How many households does a socio-economic survey need?

It depends on the indicators, how precise estimates must be, and the smallest area needing a separate estimate. A state-level estimate can rest on a few thousand households; separate district estimates multiply that. We share the calculation, including design effect, before fieldwork.

Do you collect caste information?

Only when the terms of reference require it for policy analysis. Questions are neutral, answers are voluntary, data is reported in aggregate, and it is never used to target or profile individuals.

Can you work to a government-prescribed schedule?

Yes. We can digitise a department's prescribed schedule exactly, including its codes, and run fieldwork to that format. Suggested changes, if any, are raised in writing during the pilot.

Where is survey data hosted?

Data hosting location, access control and retention are stated in writing in each proposal, so the department can check them against its own data policy before award.
