Bharat Survey is a survey company in Kolkata for campaign teams, brands, researchers and civic programmes. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation groups 144 wards into 16 boroughs, and the city votes mainly in the Kolkata Uttar and Kolkata Dakshin seats. We plan borough and ward quotas, offer Bengali, Hindi and Urdu questionnaires, and capture each interview offline with GPS and time.

Political research
KMC's 144 wards are one civic map. The parliamentary map is different. Kolkata Uttar is drawn wholly inside Kolkata district, but Kolkata Dakshin also takes Kasba, Behala Purba and Behala Paschim, which lie in South 24 Parganas. Tollygunge and Jadavpur segments, in the south of the metropolis, vote in the Jadavpur seat. A citywide sample has to say which boundary it reports on before quotas are set.

We allocate interviews by borough, then by ward inside each borough, and tag every record with its assembly segment. The same dataset can then show borough civic results and seat-level political results without redrawing the sample.

Questionnaires are translated, back-translated and piloted. Interviewers are matched to the language mix expected in each borough, and respondents choose the language at the start.

Enumerators follow fixed rules for choosing a flat or household in multi-storey and shared buildings, and log consent, GPS and duration offline.

Campaigns can move to offline booth task lists, check-ins and turnout reports. Voter lists are never imported.

How many wards and boroughs does Kolkata Municipal Corporation have?
144 wards grouped into 16 boroughs, according to KMC's borough list. The newest wards, 142 to 144 in Joka, were created in 2012 and placed in Borough 16. We sample by borough and ward and confirm ward numbers against the current list.
Which segments are in Kolkata Uttar and Kolkata Dakshin?
Kolkata Uttar has Chowringhee, Entally, Beleghata, Jorasanko, Shyampukur, Maniktala and Kashipur-Belgachhia. Kolkata Dakshin has Kolkata Port, Bhabanipur, Rashbehari and Ballygunge, plus Kasba, Behala Purba and Behala Paschim from South 24 Parganas district. We tag each interview with its segment.
Do you run surveys in Hindi and Urdu in Kolkata?
Yes. Census 2011 recorded Hindi as the first language of about 23% of Kolkata district and Urdu of about 13%. We pilot Bengali, Hindi and Urdu versions and let the respondent choose, recording the language used on every interview.
Does the monsoon affect Kolkata fieldwork?
Heavy rain can waterlog streets and slow door-to-door work in affected wards. We keep buffer days in monsoon schedules and move affected wards later in the round rather than dropping them from the sample.
