Seventeen districts, many Naga languages, one link language

Bharat Survey is a survey company in Nagaland for departments, NGOs, researchers, brands and campaign teams. Villages here are governed by their own village councils under the state's 1978 Act, and each Naga tribe has its own language, so we write tools in English and Nagamese with tribe-language prompts, inform councils before listing, and verify every interview with GPS and time.

Electoral research

Nagaland's seats are organised largely along tribal and district lines, and consensus-building within villages shapes how voters talk about politics.

We sample villages within each constituency rather than individuals picked on the roadside, since household views are often discussed collectively. Questions are neutral, asked in English or Nagamese with tribe-language prompts, and we report seats in the eastern districts apart from Kohima and Dimapur, where urban issues dominate.

Assembly and Lok Sabha

The 60-member assembly was last elected in 2023, with a single Lok Sabha seat covering the whole state. An assembly election survey agency Nagaland campaigns trust should explain the design effect of village clustering, not only the headline sample.

Evaluation

Community-managed schemes

Where village councils manage assets such as water supply, we verify on site with consent-first photos and interview both council members and ordinary households.

Independent supervision

Enumerators report to our supervisors, and a fixed share of households is re-visited before records are accepted.

FAQ

Straight answers to the questions people ask most about this topic.

Which language should a Nagaland questionnaire use?

English is the official language and Nagamese is the common link language in markets and towns. Each tribe also has its own language, so for village interviews we add prompts in the relevant language, reviewed by native speakers, and pilot all versions before fieldwork.

Do outside enumerators need an Inner Line Permit?

Nagaland requires an Inner Line Permit for visitors from outside the state, including in Dimapur under current rules. We prefer enumerators resident in Nagaland and add permit time for any outside supervisors, checking the latest state notification at inception.

Why involve village councils?

Village councils have statutory roles under the 1978 Act and strong local authority. Informing them before listing avoids refusals and misunderstandings. We explain the purpose and data use, but individual responses stay confidential and are never shared with the council.

Do you have an office in Kohima or Dimapur?

We do not claim one. Field teams are deployed per project: we recruit and train enumerators for the study and supervise quality with GPS, timestamps and back-checks in the app.
