Valley and hills, surveyed with care for both

Bharat Survey is a survey company in Manipur for departments, NGOs, researchers and campaign teams that need verified household data from the Imphal valley and the hill districts. Since the ethnic violence that began in May 2023, movement between areas has been harder, so we recruit and train enumerators resident in each area for the project, write tools in Manipuri and English with hill-language versions where needed, and verify every record by GPS and time.

How do you keep fieldwork safe in Manipur?

We recruit enumerators resident in each area for the project instead of moving one team across the state, follow district advisories, and let supervisors pause fieldwork in any locality. Sensitive questions are piloted with residents first and removed if they could put respondents or enumerators at risk.

Which script do Manipuri questionnaires use?

Since the 2021 amendment to the state's Official Language Act, Manipuri is officially written in both Meetei Mayek and Bengali script. Yes, as separate strata. Hill areas have Autonomous District Councils under the 1971 state Act, while valley districts have panchayats, so we follow the relevant local permissions and report hill and valley results separately.
